Spanish star David Bisbal to perform concert at European Parliament in Strasbourg

Bisbal and music industry delegation to meet European Parliament President, Josep Borrell

Brussels, 20th October, 2006

Spanish star David Bisbal will give an exclusive concert at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 24th October. Bisbal, whose newly released album, 'Premonición', is currently number 1 in the Spanish charts, will perform in front of a specially invited audience of Members of the European Parliament from across Europe.

David Bisbal, together with a delegation from the music industry, will also have a meeting ahead of the concert with the President Josep Borrell to raise a priority issue for artists and producers in Europe. The artist is among thousands of performers from around Europe who are calling for the term of protection on recordings to be extended in the European Union. At the meeting with President Borrell, he will be accompanied by Vale Music President, Ricardo Campoy; John Kennedy, President and CEO of IFPI, representing the recording industry worldwide; and Antonio Guisasola, director of Spanish music industry federation, Promusicae.

Bisbal said: "I grew up with songs in my heart and dreaming of a career in music. I am happy that my record company was able to take a chance on me. Now I want other young artists who are passionate about music to have the same chance to follow their dream. If recordings were protected for longer in Europe, record companies would be able to invest even more in discovering and developing exciting new talent."

Recordings have a 50 year term of protection in Europe, which is much shorter than many other countries including the U.S, (95 years), Singapore (70), Australia (70), Brazil (70). Performers and producers are therefore calling on the EU to extend term of protection in Europe to 95 years to equalise with the U.S., in the course of the European Commission's current review of copyright legislation. Ricardo Campoy said: "This is all about respecting the past, cherishing the present and promoting the future of music in Europe."
