Australian record industry action against operators of Kazaa

29 November

Statement by Jay Berman

IFPI Chairman and CEO Jay Berman said:

"We are very pleased to see the Australian music industry bringing the operators of Kazaa to court. The Australian case claims that Kazaa is violating copyright on a massive scale, misleading its users and deliberately harming the legitimate music industry. We strongly support these claims and will be watching the Australian trial with great interest."

Background for Editors

The anti-piracy case brought the Australian record companies against the operators of the Kazaa file-sharing system commenced in the Federal Court of Australia in Sydney on November 29.

The case against the Kazaa-related companies and individuals consists of three claims: direct and indirect copyright infringement; misrepresentation to consumers ('unconscionable' conduct); and conspiracy to harm record companies.
